Embassy history

Diplomatic relations between the United Kingdom and Belarus were first established in 1991. The Embassy opened in May 1993, housed in the German Embassy.  The present office at 37 Karl Marx Street was opened in July 1995 by the then Minister for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, Sir Nicholas Bonsor.

Since it opened with 2 UK-based staff, the Embassy has increased to 4 UK-based staff.  Additional UK staff members in specialised areas cover Belarus from neighbouring countries. The Defence Attaché, for example, resides in Moscow.

Our Ambassador, Rosemary Thomas, arrived in Belarus in August 2007.
